Aranciata on ice…

Monday, August 4th, 2008 by calixton

…is what I usually get at the Jazz Caffe. I like the Jazz Caffe. It’s situated, appropriately enough, in The Jazzschool. The food is good, but I rarely eat there (the menu is just on the edge of pricey and I’m just on the edge of cheap—scratch that, I’m well in the region of cheap). […]

Stairway tread…

…at the Downtown Berkeley BART station. Actually, this photo is from one of the landings, but the steps have this same tread. My assumption is that this alternating metal and rubber (plastic? hard-packed sand? loose-packed sand?) pattern was designed for safety and durability. Unfortunately, the pattern has a mesmerizing effect, and makes the edge of […]

Early morning…

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008 by calixton

…in the early summer. In keeping with the whole “Bay Area summers are cold” theme, I took this misty morning photo on campus today. The fog eventually burned off and the sun came out, but Berkeley peaked today at about 65°—hardly beach ball and bikini weather. At this time of year the difference in the […]

Gray morning in Berkeley…

Monday, June 16th, 2008 by calixton

…but it cleared up by noon. In fact, it’s actually quite nice and sunny right now. Just more proof that these blog posts are at least out-of-date if not outright lies. I’d say this photo is an accurate representation of the street when I snapped it except that it’s a composite (there was a guy […]

Seen the other day…

…on the street in front of our building (at work). It’s gone now. Don’t know who put it there or who they put it there for. I think the critter might be some sort of hamster. Or, since there’s no reference scale, maybe a hippo.

Rory Root, 1958–2008

Monday, May 19th, 2008 by calixton

I’ve been shopping at Comic Relief in Berkeley on and off for about 18 years, and, up until this week, Comic Relief was Rory Root. Rory recently passed away after complications from surgery. R.I.P. Rory Root.

Milano rafters…

…venting super-caffeineted hot air. That’s actually an inept (i.e. crap) caption, but it’s too dang hot to think of anything better. The café, Café Milano, is actually full of… looks like students primarily… but overall I find the rafters more interesting. Guess that’s another function of being an old guy in a college town. ¡Otros […]

Fixed table…

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 by calixton

…and fixed chair. At UC Berkeley’s Freedom of Speech Movement Café the tables and chairs on the outdoor deck are firmly bolted down. This ensures that the concrete tables won’t topple over and the wooden seating won’t be stolen, but it also imposes a strict order on the students who congregate there—no more than two […]

The Kitchen…

Thursday, May 8th, 2008 by calixton

…in the copier room. It may not look like much, but you’d be amazed at the variety of food you can prepare with just a microwave oven and a toaster. And, oh yeah, a paper cutter (off camera, to the right of the toaster). And, some binder clips.

Looking up…

…at bricks. You know, I always feel a little weird around brick buildings in California. Even if they’re all reinforced on the inside, all of these bricks are gonna come crashing down on your head when there’s an earthquake.
