Anime Expo is coming…

Monday, June 30th, 2008 by calixton

…but Max Pictures isn’t going. For the first time since we started regularly attending in 1999, Miss T and I are taking a pass on Anime Expo. While my anime life continues on, Max Pictures’ My Anime Life has ground to a halt, and I’ve decided to not return to the convention until I can […]

Waiting for the Capitol Corridor…

Saturday, June 28th, 2008 by calixton

…down in the BART station. Last night, for some reason the eastbound Capitol Corridor train was 30 minutes late. Having arrived a half-hour early for the train, I ending up spending an hour in the fluorescent-lit confines of the Richmond BART station. It was really quite boring (just like this post).

Red sky in morning…

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008 by calixton

…sailor take warning (or so the saying goes). We definitely had a red sky at the Davis Amtrak station this morning. But, since our little hamlet is a good 75 miles from the nearest ocean coastline, the red sky/sailor thing probably doesn’t apply. It also probably doesn’t apply since our red skies aren’t weather-related, but […]

Not your mother’s iced tea…

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 by calixton

…unless she’s from Thailand (or likes to make Thai beverages). DPete professed his desire for a Vietnamese coffee earlier today. Intrigued, I followed him to Saigon Express where, indeed, they have Vietnamese coffee. Having been coffee’d out earlier in the day, though, I went with the Thai iced tea (pictured above). If you’d like to […]

I usually think of cemeteries…

Monday, June 23rd, 2008 by calixton

…as cool and quiet places—probably because I’m typically there in the dead of night, digging up new graves in search of brains. But, this past Saturday Miss T and I met up with our friend Programmer GIrl and her friend S. for a sweltering hot tour of Sacramento’s old City Cemetery (a.k.a. the Sacramento Historic […]

Track signals at night…

Friday, June 20th, 2008 by calixton

…at the end of the Davis Amtrak station platform. I took this photo on a warm Central Valley night a couple of weeks ago. It took me a long time to take the photo because the area was crawling with cockroaches. I’m getting the heebie-jeebies now just thinking about it. Brrr…

Loudspeakers…

Thursday, June 19th, 2008 by calixton

…at train stations. Richmond BART above and Davis Amtrak below. The problem I have with the BART station loudspeakers is that they rarely have useful information for me. While it’s great to know that the elevator at the East Lansing, Michigan station is out of order and that only your vigilance on BART can protect […]

Son of Rambow

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008 by calixton

Yesterday morning I had my head drilled by the dentist—not so fun. Yesterday afternoon Miss T and I caught Son of Rambow at the Davis Varsity Theatre—very fun. The movie reminded me of an ’80s John Hughes film—maybe because it’s set in the ’80s and has an awesome ’80s (albeit short) soundtrack. There’s also a […]

Gray morning in Berkeley…

Monday, June 16th, 2008 by calixton

…but it cleared up by noon. In fact, it’s actually quite nice and sunny right now. Just more proof that these blog posts are at least out-of-date if not outright lies. I’d say this photo is an accurate representation of the street when I snapped it except that it’s a composite (there was a guy […]

The mushrooms are in the way…

Saturday, June 14th, 2008 by calixton

…but we had bison burgers for dinner last night. They pretty much tasted like beef. As you can tell from the plate, pretty much everything was grilled. Grilled bison, grilled mushrooms, grilled salad (except the tomatoes). We also had grilled bratwurst. I say everything was grilled instead of barbecued since barbecue is a slow-cooking process […]
