Let’s get small

You may have noticed this photographic effect where a narrow band of an image is in focus but the rest is blurred. It makes the scenes in the photos look like they’re of miniature scale models. This is called the tilt-shift effect and it can be achieved photographically using a tilt-shift lens. But you can get a similar effect Photoshopically by reading Wired’s How-To Wiki article, “Miniaturize a Scene.”

It’s a fun, if trendy, photoeffect that’s pretty easy to implement. The tough part is learning what images are best suited for tilt-shift miniaturization. I’ve included this boring example which I edited today:

Miniature West Circle

and the even more-boring original which I shot today:

West Circle

Happy smalling!
